FAQ

“Why Skycastle?”

Skycastle has unequalled expertise in building green custom homes in Boulder.  We teach Boulder’s official Green Building 101 course and consult for the County on their codes.  We understand all the rules, and have strong positive relationships with Building Department officials.  We’ve used many of the same consultants and engineers for a decade, and have developed a team with thorough experience building according to the local codes and conditions. Skycastle treats its subcontractors and vendors fairly and has an excellent reputation in the building community, which means that you get great prices and the best quality work from your entire construction team.  Lastly, we have developed a process for working with our clients (many of whom are not local during the design and construction process) that makes the sometimes daunting and uncertain process of building a custom home as predictable, safe, transparent and enjoyable as possible.

We are very happy and proud of the result as well and happy to show it off to anyone you want to show it to.  We have loved every bit of the process and so much of that is due to you and the rest of the team.  It was a joy working with all of you.  As soon as we get everything unpacked, we would love to find a time to have you all up to the house.  The only part of the house being finished that is sad is that we won’t see as much of you.  We’re really glad that you are building the house across the street and hope that you will drop in for a cup of coffee when you are up there.”

“What is the advantage of design/build?”

With our design arm Rodwin Architecture we create a seamless team process.  Design/build can save on time and cost, and carry through the architectural design with the highest degree of integrity. You get a design that from start to finish is in alignment with your budget.  Lastly, you get single point responsibility from Skycastle for the entire process and results.

“How long does the process take?”

Overall the design, engineering, bid and permitting process usually take about 6 months, and construction of an average sized new home takes about 12 months.

“How does the contract work and how much do you charge?”

We offer you your choice of either a Fixed Fee (Hard Bid) contract or a “Cost+ contract. We’re happy to provide you with a sample contract for your review during the interview process.  Our fee is based on the cost of the project multiplied by a percentage (we provide you with an individual quote based on the specific details of your project) plus a Site Supervision Fee.

“How am I assured of getting a good price for the project?”

Compare our Cost+ fee to other builders.  We are very competitively priced compared to local builders of equal quality.  Where we really deliver value to you is that we work unusually hard to get the most competitive bids from our subcontractors and material vendors.  Because it’s a Cost+ contract, any savings we find pass through straight to you.

“How am I assured of getting good quality?”

Visit our prior projects and talk to our past clients.  We build our houses to an unusually high level of quality, and specialize in creating some of the most energy-efficient and durable homes anywhere.  Lastly, all our projects come with an unusually comprehensive Warranty.
